Unit Overview:

This unit can be used after "Unit Two: The Cookie Crumbles" (TJ/02:00/Pvr). This study broadens the concept of community from our "best friend" to classroom, family or household, and neighborhood. We are searching for trust in our classrooms, families, and neighborhoods. Discovering ways that we as citizens can trust the people in our neighborhoods and communities around us is important in the eyes of little learners. Knowing who they can trust when they are in need is important in establishing the concept of community.

Unit Purpose:

This unit is designed to encourage learners to trust their families, classmates, and neighbors. The classroom setting provides a safe environment for experimentation with trusting others. Enjoy the variety of intelligences that are displayed in the unit.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

identify the whole class, family, and neighborhood as a community.
explain how each member in the neighborhood can work together to make it a nice place to live.
describe rules that communities follow.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

In Lesson Three: Our Neighborhood as a Community the students will determine what they can do to contribute to their classroom or school community. They will volunteer to do one job.

Have students bring in a picture of those people who live in their household for Lesson Two: Our Family. (See Attachment One, Lesson Two for a parent letter explaining the assignment.)

Notes for Teaching:

Be sure to look ahead for instructions. Prior to Lesson One: Our Classroom: The Community Of Fun, the students need to wear a specific color (blue) to school the day you begin Lesson One. Prior to Lesson Two: Our Family, students should have a picture or have a drawing of the people who live in their households. Prior to Lesson Three: Our Neighborhood as a Community, set up a list of community helpers who are available to come into the class and present for 30-45 minutes.
