Unit Overview:

The learner will:

describe how traditions help form strong, healthy communities.
recall previously-studied traditions and study new traditions.
create a class Philanthropy Dictionary and a Teaching Quilt Banner to use when giving "Show and Tell" presentations to other groups.
read award-winning children's literature with a quilting theme to introduce basic philanthropic concepts.
identify quilt patterns that celebrated philanthropic activities.
identify a community need for quilts, make a plan, follow through with the plan, and reflect on a purposeful act of kindness.

Unit Purpose:

Students will learn the vocabulary of philanthropy, use literature to discover acts of philanthropy in the making of quilts, and participate in their own quilting bee.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

define and use the vocabulary of philanthropy.
compare and contrast quilting stories related to tradition and philanthropic concepts.
describe historic acts of philanthropy by interpreting traditional quilt patterns.
fulfill a need in the community by working collectively on a project.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

The learners will:

present a "Show and Tell" program describing philanthropy to other classes or organizations.
determine if there is a need for quilts in the community, make a quilt and give it away. (optional)

Unit Assessment:

Students will give clear and accurate explanations of philanthropic terms to others during "Show and Tell" programs. At the end of the unit, students will complete a "Reflections" worksheet, describing the making of quilts and purposeful acts of kindness as examples of philanthropy.
