Description

Explore the major concepts relating philanthropy to the principles of democracy. Compare philanthropic concepts to the core documents of the Unites States and discover how the civil society sector serves as a “check and balance” to the government.

Learning Objectives

The learner will:

  1. identify concepts that relate the philanthropic sector to principles of democracy, including social contract, social capital, and “self-interest rightly understood.”
  2. identify and describe the relationship of philanthropic concepts to core documents of the United States, especially in protecting minority rights.
  3. identify how nonprofit organizations serve as mediating institutions.
  4. recognize the role of the civil society sector in holding government officials accountable and providing innovations to keep our democracy dynamic.

Upon successful completion of each module, the learner may request a certificate suitable for a professional development portfolio or as proof of educational clock hours that can be used towards continuing education credit in most states.
