Unit Overview:

This unit in three lessons can be a complement to a community unit. In Lesson One: Responsibility and Jobs , students learn about responsibility and responsible behavior. In Lesson Two: Community Helpers , students learn about two of the four sectors (for-profit/business and nonprofit). They learn about needs in a community and how those needs are met by two sectors. In Lesson Three: Volunteers in the Community , students learn about the impact of volunteers on the community. In the final lesson they learn about community responsibility and carry out a volunteer project of their own.

Unit Purpose:

Students will become aware of the not-for-profit and volunteer positions that are essential parts of any community.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • name community jobs/helpers.
  • define responsibility and identify responsible behavior.
  • name community helpers.
  • define the terms “for-profit” and “not-for-profit.”
  • give examples of non-profit jobs.
  • define and give examples of volunteers.
  • relate the concepts of responsibility for the common good and volunteering.
  • choose and carry out a volunteer project in the school or local community.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students brainstorm ways to act for the common good in the community. They choose one activity to carry out and work together to complete it. Students will analyze benefits of their actions and identify whom they affect.

Unit Assessment:

  • In Lesson One: Responsibility and Jobs , students draw themselves acting responsibly in four different situations. Assess whether the student recognizes that responsibility includes helping, making good choices, completing tasks and being a good “citizen.”
  • In Lesson Two: Community Helpers , students illustrate a community helper. Use the following rubric to assess student understanding of the chosen career.

Unit Assessment:

  • In Lesson Three: Volunteers in the Community, assess student understanding of community responsibility by asking them to name or illustrate two jobs in the community that are for pay and two “jobs” that are done by volunteers. Younger children can illustrate one of each.

School/Home Connection:

  • “Copy-and-Paste” Class/School Newsletter Information Insert:
    Who are the workers that make up the careers in our community? Communities have many needs that are met by for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations and volunteers. Our class will look at how these careers meet needs. We will also examine what responsible community behavior looks like and look at ways we can meet some needs through our own volunteer efforts. This is a great opportunity for families to talk about their own careers and volunteer work with their child.
  • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
  • Send home the homework that encourages families to talk about what it means to be responsible. See Lesson One: Responsibility and Jobs , Attachment One: What Is Responsibility?
  • Send home Lesson Two: Community Helpers , Attachment One: Volunteering in the Community . Have students talk with their families about volunteering and community helpers. They should bring their homework in the following day.
